This month sees the publication of two new books by members:

“In search of Words”
by Oliver West
builds on his successful “Footnotes” programme which many people will have enjoyed and profited from.

As a professional artist, printmaker and university lecturer, he has the experience to pass on his knowledge of visual-spatial technique to people of any age or any background.
The methods he promotes are simple and extremely practical. But they are presented with his own special charisma. He is a brilliant teacher. His enthusiasm can inspire a whole school.

Dyslexics listening to him are astonished to hear someone talking to them in a language they can understand. They may even feel that for the first time they have met another human being.!!

For non-dyslexics his words, written or spoken, are a revelation. A whole new world is suddenly opened up for them. Here is a way to contact creative minds and, what is more, to rouse one’s own creative skills.

Lizzie Stevens represented ADT at the launch of the book at Falmouth Library on November 21st and much enjoyed the exhilerating company. For more information contact:

Back to the Sky; How to fly with dyslexia
by Emma Elliott illustrated by Helene Koole

Book Launching, Talk, Performance & Book Signing for Back to the Sky by Emma Elliott.
December 2nd 2008 To which you are invited.

A book launch with a difference: A talk about the book, a performance of fables, and a book signing to celebrate the publication of Emma Elliott’s first book : ‘Back to the Sky: how to fly with Dyslexia’ will be held at 7.00pm on December 2nd 2008 at Waterstones, 15 Eastgate Street, Gloucester, GL1 1NS. The public is invited to attend this event free.

Back to the Sky draws on a lifetime of personal experience and 13 years of teaching, where the author has helped dyslexics to embrace and work more harmoniously with their minds. The book will help dyslexics and non-dyslexics alike understand the truth behind the dyslexic mind.

Emma, who resides in Tewkesbury is profoundly dyslexic, she still struggles with the mechanics of reading and writing, but thanks to the introduction of voice recognition and text reading technology, a whole new realm of language has opened up to her, enabling her to write this and other works as yet unpublished.

Ultimately ‘Back to the Sky’ is a self-help book with a difference. It works in a practical down to earth way, yet at the same time it is inspiring and uplifting.

Reviews from the publishers: Olympia

"With Back to the Sky, Emma Elliot has written for us a most wondrous and delightful book. Coming out of her own personal struggles, it is part comic whimsy, part fantasy, part common sense instruction and part Zen meditation. The book draws on a deep reservoir of talent and understanding. Dyslexics and non-dyslexics alike will gain new insight from Emma's learning to fly.''

author of In the Mind's Eye and Thinking Like Einstein

"This book is an absolute joy - you can read it, learn from it, perform it and celebrate the triumph of finding and loving yourself and others. 'Back to the Sky' was written as a loving encouragement to dyslexic ways of being and thinking. I hope it isn't just offered to readers diagnosed with dyslexia - we all need this book for most of us have felt we didn't fit into conventional modes at some time in our lives. And many more recognise that we look at life from the 'duck's' prospective whether full-time or part-time. This is a self-development book which guides by facing reality fair and square, reintroducing us to the inner wisdom with a sense of hope and fun, alongside the practical help which the author used to triumph over her own adversities.

Get a copy for yourself, your children, your parents and your friends - give them all an opportunity to go .Back to the Sky"

"Integrity is a rare jewel in our contemporary world. Surrounded as we are by false claims and misleading information, whether fuelled by commercial, political, and other powerful group pressures, or simply individual personal prejudice, it is often difficult to see who or where we are and to find a clear way forward through the noise of our daily lives.

Against that background this book shines out like a small diamond on the bed of a muddy pebble-strewn stream. Hopefully, it will light candles and point out a new path for many people, not only the dyslexics indicated in the title who will at once be fired by its vision.

Emma's insight cuts through all the convoluted fluff and nonsense which the poor abused word “dyslexia” has collected over the last few decades, and goes straight to the heart of the subject. She truly speaks her truth, describing directly from her own experience what it is like to be a person who “sees” in a world where that ability goes unrecognised.

She does not dwell on the pain and grief of early years of humiliation. On the contrary, she has defused those memories and she affirms with joy the discovery of her true self and her home in the natural world. Her vision is conveyed with simplicity, humour and enthusiasm. It is a vision that other people can follow with equal delight''

Latest news from Thomas West

He writes:- .'I thought you might be interested to know of the "twice exceptional" (gifted and LD) conference scheduled for Nov. 20 and 21. It takes place in Clarksville, near Columbia, Maryland. I will be the first speaker on the second day, Friday, Nov. 21 -- scheduled to "provide examples of how dyslexics and other strong visual thinkers, given the right circumstances and educational context, can become engines of innovation and discovery.'' It promises to be a most informative program. We eagerly await a report. Further information from:-
